Each month, dedicated volunteers or community partners will be recognized for the time and talents dedicated to Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS).
Paul Palombo is a well-known face to staff and students around Shelton Park Elementary School. As a volunteer with GrowSmart’s Virginia Beach READS campaign, he helps children strengthen their reading skills through one-on-one tutoring.
“Mr. Paul is a dedicated and dependable volunteer and someone the kids look forward to seeing,” said the school’s principal Tara Brewer. “He’s here almost every day, dedicating his time to the children.”
Students also believe Palombo is a positive force within the school.
“I like spending time with him practicing reading,” said first-grader Everett Craft. “He makes it fun and doesn’t rush me. His games are my favorite and are really fun, too.”
As an educator for more than 20 years, Palombo understands the importance of volunteers in education.
“I was familiar with the volunteer program because I had worked for the school system,” he explained. “I knew it was an outstanding program. The schools play a crucial role in the success of Virginia Beach and it is a privilege and honor to be a part of the success.”
Palombo’s service to the division doesn’t stop there.
“He has been volunteering countless hours this year in our school cafeteria and mentors students, in addition to the VB READS program,” states Brewer. “He comes and helps in whatever capacity.”
When asked about his favorite volunteering activity, he replied, “Any activity that I get to work with students is amazing!”
Although he retired two years ago, Palombo still wanted to be involved in the division and contribute to education in some capacity.
“I enjoy volunteering because the students are inspiring and motivating,” said Palombo. “VBCPS plays the most important role in the future success of Virginia Beach. I truly believe this!”
