This is the first article in a series of profiles about each of Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ 2020 Model Partnerships.
The partnership between ACN Independent Business Owner and the Advanced Technology Center (ATC)’s Marketing and Entrepreneurship Program helps students experience hands-on business and networking. ACN’s mentor, Harrell Peterson, uses real-world scenarios to assist students with their personal and professional financial goals. Projects include activities that teach strategies regarding investments, trading stock, markets and risks and rewards of owning a business.
The goal of the partnership is to support learning in the classroom that will prepare students for scenarios and opportunities outside of the school setting. Projects include Cashflow 101, a board game that involves small groups to purchase property, trade stocks and evaluate risks and rewards of business ownership.
ACN has been involved with ATC’s marketing class for 23 years, benefiting more than 700 students by providing experience and knowledge necessary to be a successful business owner.

I’m glad to see students getting “required life knowledge” that they can use and apply starting now and carry them throughout their adulthood. Hopefully they will pass it along/down to others so they, too, can plan to be financially literate and secure in an ever changing economy. Some of us adults would love to get that kind of information because it wasn’t taught to us when we were in school. How can we get the tools and training, as adults, to learn what is being taught to the students in this magnificent program?
