The love of baseball transcends all ages. If you need proof, look no further than the recent baseball clinics held at Kempsville Elementary Schools. The “coaches” for the clinics were none other than members of the Kempsville High School baseball team.
“Our baseball team wanted to start giving back to the community that has been so generous to us,” said Will Matney, a senior at Kempsville High. “We are giving back what the coaches have given to us.”
During the fall, the older students came over and held three separate clinics for the third- through fifth-graders. Approximately 40 students attended and learned tips for hitting and fielding. Additionally, the students were divided into groups for more in-depth training and given tools for success.
Also on hand was Kempsville High’s head coach, Travis Sutton. For his part, this experience was as beneficial to his players and it was their elementary school partners.
“The whole program is designed to get them to better understand their community,” said Sutton. “The younger kids look up to the older kids and this allows them to engage while learning the game. This builds up the community.”
