Eleven students participated in the Virginia Beach School of Practical Nursing’s 49th Commencement Exercises on April 26. Six began as adult students, but five began in their senior year of high school.
The nursing students were recognized before family members, friends and school administrators for successfully completing the rigorous program that prepares them to take the National Council Licensure Examination in order to become licensed practical nurses.
The 18-month Licensed Practical Nursing program is a challenging, hands-on program that teaches students bedside nursing skills and caring for the ill of all ages. In addition to demanding academic studies in physiology and anatomy, nursing, maternal studies, child and mental health, and pharmacology, students also hone their nursing skills by completing clinical work and a 72-hour preceptorship in local hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities.
The highlight of the pinning ceremony came as graduates received a specially designed VBSPN nursing pin. This pin is worn as part of the nurse’s uniform, along with a symbolic lamp, which pays tribute to the nursing field – specifically the dedication of Florence Nightingale and all nurses to the welfare of others.
After their presentation, the graduates recited the Nightingale Pledge and were formally presented to the audience by David Swanger, the Director of the Career and Education Center of Virginia Beach.
The Virginia Beach School of Practical Nursing Graduating Class of 2013 are: Christina Armistead, Melissa Bazile, Tiffany Donahue, Tatiana Fogle, Trinette Herring, Taylor Laster, Thuc Luu, Marissa Seales-Ash, Claire Scott, Alicia Tolbert and Gabrielle Toney
