For Jean Morrison, driving a bus for Virginia Beach City Public Schools isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. With 22 years behind the wheel and a heart full of joy, Jean’s enthusiasm for her work is contagious.
“It’s the most rewarding job I have ever had. I can’t praise it enough,” Jean says, smiling wide.
Spend five minutes with her, and you’ll feel it, too. Jean’s positive energy is palpable—radiating from every word she speaks and every story she tells about the students and families she’s come to know and love.
More Than a Route — It’s a Relationship
Jean has driven students from kindergarten through high school, forming meaningful bonds along the way. From thoughtful gifts — like hand-drawn turtles from a student artist or a souvenir keychain brought all the way from Paris — to heartfelt conversations with parents, Jean has found lasting connections through her service.
“If you give yourself to your kids, they will definitely give [themselves] back,” she says. “You show them respect, and they’ll show it right back.”
That mutual respect and care drive everything Jean does and has inspired others to step into the driver’s seat.
Support and Opportunity at Every Turn
Jean is also a bus driver trainer, helping new recruits succeed behind the wheel. The training process is comprehensive, and importantly, paid — a benefit that has made the opportunity more accessible.
Trainee Susie Delich moved to Virginia Beach from Arizona after retirement, looking for a flexible way to support her family and spend time with her grandchildren. She found not just a role, but a warm welcome.
“Everybody I’ve encountered in leadership has been encouraging. They want you to succeed,” Susie shares.
“When Jean called me the first day, she said, ‘I’ve been doing this job for 22 years and I love it. It is the best job ever.’”
The classroom and on-the-road training gave Susie confidence, and being paired with Jean made the experience even more special.
Flexibility for Families, Freedom for Drivers
Jean’s daily schedule is packed, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. And for those looking for more flexibility, that’s available.
“You can be a six-hour driver, just do your morning and afternoon runs and go home. And still get the same satisfaction I do,” Jean explains.
There are also perks families might love — like being able to bring your child (as young as one year old) on the bus when driving, generous time off aligned with the school calendar, and the option to park your bus at work or at home.
A Career — and a Community
Whether she’s training, running activity buses, or simply checking in with her fellow drivers, Jean embodies what it means to be part of something bigger.
“You’re not micromanaged. You’re empowered. You own your route. You know your kids. You know your parents,” Jean says. “It’s a family.”
