This is the second article in a series of profiles about each finalist for Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ 2020 Citywide Teacher of the Year. The citywide winner will be announced at the Teacher of the Year dinner hosted by the Virginia Beach Education Foundation May 2.
Anthony Nobles is an eighth grade civics teacher at Plaza Middle School and a graduate of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
“School was where I felt that I really belonged,” said Nobles. “The classroom is a place where I can be myself and I am lucky that my position allows me to highlight civic-mindedness and service learning.”
Nobles enjoys including meaningful community partnerships in his lessons. Each year he takes his students to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, challenging them to propose their own fundraiser to support a cause and implement their vision.
“I believe that the health of our society depends on getting students involved, and the best way to do this is through real-world experiences and opportunities,” stated Nobles. “Our school and our district are stronger if we have meaningful partnerships with government decision makers and community leaders.”
As a teacher, Nobles thinks the most important thing is to instill a value for education in his students and to “foster an intrinsic passion for learning.” He does so through building positive relationships with students and displaying content expertise.
“Students are central in my class,” Nobles said. “I work with students to develop their plan and implement their ideas throughout the year, allowing them an opportunity for leadership.”
Plaza Middle School Principal Deborah Prince wrote in her recommendation letter, “Once you meet him, you will know as I do, his curiosity, energy and positive spirit permeates the classroom and the school. His love for students is contagious and has a lasting impact.”
His students feel the same.
“Being an amazing teacher is an understatement,” said Katie Royle, one of Nobles’ eighth-grade students. “He is one of the most caring teachers I have come across. He is like sunshine after a rainy day; you can always count on him and his class to make your day even better.”
“Middle school is tough,” explained Nobles. “At a time when many students are figuring out who they want to be, I am lucky to have a small role in their lives.”
“I love teaching. It challenges me, fulfills me and makes me happy. I wouldn’t choose anything else to do with my life.”
