Lynnhaven River Now and The Elizabeth River Project are sponsoring a project called “Growing Wetlands in the Classroom”. The Virginia Beach Middle School Environmental Club is taking part in the project by helping to promote tidal wetland restoration by growing and planting black needlerush, a native plant that serves as “a buffer vegetation for shoreline erosion control.”
Virginia Beach Middle students recently transfered several of the young black needlerush plants from their pots and planted them in the Virginia Beach Middle School wetland and rain garden, an area that surrounds the school. Later this spring, additional plants will be planted at Lighthouse on the Cove which is home to the Virginia Beach Middle School oyster restoration site. Students will monitor the growth of the plants at both locations.
