Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Parent Connection is partnering with WTKR NewsChannel 3 and Southern Bank to host a Beach Bags food drive Thursday, May 28, at two locations in Virginia Beach. Beach Bags provides shelf-stable meals and healthy snacks to VBCPS students who might otherwise go hungry during weekends. The outreach program is supported entirely by donations from community members, area businesses and school organizations.
Volunteers will collect donations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Town Center’s Fountain Plaza and Landstown Commons Shopping Center from those who want to support the Beach Bags program.
“We know that students are more ready to learn when they have sufficient food to eat. And time and time again, the community demonstrates its love of our children with its generous support to ensure their success. We couldn’t provide weekend Beach Bags without the public’s contributions, and we are grateful for this continued support,” said VBCPS superintendent Aaron Spence.
Tax-deductible donations may be made payable to the Virginia Beach Education Foundation, and any of the following food items may be donated to be packed in Beach Bags for students:
- Individual-sized cereal boxes or oatmeal
- 8-ounce servings of shelf stable milk
- Individual-sized meals (ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, macaroni and cheese, chunky soups, etc.)
- 4-ounce or larger fruit cups
- 100% juice boxes
- Snack items (granola bars, pudding cups, pretzels, trail mix, snack crackers, etc.)
