The final Beach Girls Rock! (BGR!) workshop of the school year is Saturday, March 30, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Salem High School. The theme is “All the World’s a Stage: Take the Lead!”
The keynote speaker will be WVEC’s Ashley Smith. Afterward, students have more than a dozen breakout sessions to choose from, including Introduction to Self-Defense, Self-Love and Hip-Hop, STEMPowered! and Self-Advocacy: Dealing with Challenging Situations.
Parents are also encouraged to attend the workshop where they can talk to school representatives, attend a Parent Panel discussion and learn about the Advanced Technology Center.
Salem sophomore Lauren Meekins has been the student organizer for the workshop, and she encourages any girl to consider spending a Saturday morning at BGR!
“When I was in middle school,” she recalled, “I wasn’t very active outside of classes. I feel like this is a great opportunity that you don’t want to miss out on and then regret not doing a few years down the line. Get the experience now. And even if you don’t like it, you can still say that you tried.”
BGR! Coordinator and English teacher Ally Taylor seconds that recommendation. “It’s an opportunity to build friendships. Plus, you can never start too early planning for college or career. Take the chance, take the opportunity, take the lead!”
The event is open to female students in grades five to eight and their parents. Interested students may register now through March 20 in their school counseling offices. Limited registration will be available on-site March 30.

Why is this event only open to grades 5-8? I believe my daughter, who is in 9th grade would benefit from this as well. Seems unfair to older girls.
