Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL) and Virginia Beach City Public Schools are working together to kick off the VBPL’s 2014 Summer Reading Challenge for all ages on Monday, June 16. The program encourages children, teens and adults to read for fun during summer, with the opportunity to earn incentives along the way.
As part of the Summer Reading Challenge, libraries will host a variety of free programs for all ages, all summer long, with balloon artists, reptile zoos, magicians, musicians and more. Age appropriate prizes for children age 10 and younger include passes to Virginia Aquarium, Color Me Mine, Botanical Gardens, MOCA and more. Among incentives for children ages 10 – 18 are a surfboard, popular boxed book sets, e-readers and movie and music bundles.
Beginning June 16, visit www.VBgov.com/SRC to register and begin tracking your summer reading progress. Computers with Internet access are available at all libraries. To participate, just read any books you want and track the titles online. The more you read, the better your chances to win prizes.
The Friends of Virginia Beach Public Library fully fund the Summer Reading Challenge, granting more than $30,000 each year for the purchase of new books as reading rewards for children and teens, and programs and grand prizes for all ages. Local businesses and organizations contribute prizes and incentives. All reading must be logged and all incentives picked up from VBPL locations by Saturday, Aug. 9. Grand prize winners will be contacted by Friday, Aug. 15.
