Those elementary school memories always have a way to staying with you – years after you have left.
At least they did with Jaden Stanford, a sophomore at Princess Anne High School.
Stanford attended Windsor Woods Elementary School from first through fifth grade until the 2010-2011 school year and currently has a younger brother in first-grade at the school.
She was walking around the neighborhood with her father when she walked through the butterfly garden, located on the bus loop side of Windsor Woods. She remembered when her principal at the time, Drummond Ball, was introducing the garden to the school and he shared his thoughts on how he envisioned the garden to look.
Knowing that Ball recently retired and seeing the plaque that was dedicated to him naming the garden the “C. Drummond Ball Children’s Garden,” Stanford was inspired.
She contacted Windsor Woods Principal Matthew Orebaugh and Assistant Principal Heather Quinn to obtain permission to work on the garden to restore it to Ball’s original vision. She researched the plants that would grow favorably in the garden. She wanted to include plants that would attract butterflies, and be enjoyable to look at. Stanford proceeded to weed out the brush, plant new flowers and mulched.
Stanford’s work has been a success, butterflies have been seen throughout the garden.
