It’s been quite a busy month for students at Ocean Lakes High School (OLHS), and it doesn’t look like it has any plans to slow down.
Ocean Lakes’s Minh-Quan Pham was selected as a semi-finalist for the Siemens Foundation Math, Science and Technology Competition. The Siemens Competition is regarded as one of the leading science and mathematics research-based competitions for high school students.
The awards keep coming in.
Gregory Neatrour has won the Wendy’s High School Heisman for Virginia representing Ocean Lakes. To be considered for this honor, Neatrour had to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, participate in a school sport and demonstrate leadership in community service. There is a male and female winner from each state, and, nationwide, there were more than 48,000 applicants competing for the honor. State winners go on to compete regionally and then nationally for their chance to be named a National Winner.
Other students have also been demonstrating their care for their community.
OLHS princiapl Dr. Cheryl Askew awarded sophomore Austin Griffin an Ocean Lakes “Got Caught” award for helping a neighbor avoid disaster. As he was walking home from the bus stop after school, Griffin noticed flames crawling up the side of neighbor Mark Liersch’s house. Griffin immeidately called 911, then his parents, who were able to get in touch with Liersch. Thanks to Griffin’s call, the Virginia Beach Fire Department was able to get on scene and put out the fire before it reached the house’s interior.
“He came to the rescue of my dog, my house, and my faith by dialing 911 without hesitation,” Liersch wrote in a letter to Askew.
Keep up the great work.
