Students from Bayside High School’s Earth Science and AP Environmental Science classes, along with classroom teachers April Clark and Diana Scofield, launched two 5 by 10 foot floating wetland islands into the retention pond at the Hampton Road Sanitation District Chesapeake/Elizabeth Treatment Plant on Shore Drive.
This project is part of the Lynnhaven River Now’s “Growing Wetlands in the Classroom” program funded by the Dollar Tree. Students from Independence Middle, Shelton Park Elementary, Windsor Woods Elementary along with Bayside students grew the wetland plants in their classrooms. The purpose of the planting was to increase wetland habitats and filter the pond water.
