As the 2019-2020 school year begins, here are a few safety reminders:
AlertNow
AlertNow is the rapid notification system used by the school division to contact families via email, phone or text regarding emergencies, weather delays or other important school information. Be sure to update your contact information with your school to receive these notifications. First-time users or those who have changed cellphone numbers this summer should also opt-in to receive text messages after the school has updated family contact information. After the text-enabled phone number is entered into the system, AlertNow will automatically send a text message to your phone to confirm the request. You may also opt-in by simply texting “yes” to 67587. Learn more about AlertNow by visiting vbschools.com.
Buzz-In System
As an added layer of security, last school year the division added buzz-in systems to all schools. Since all building doors are locked, school visitors should look for a silver box located at school front entrances and press the call button on the box. The school’s security personnel will answer those requesting entry through the voice-and-video intercom. Read more about this added feature on vbschools.com.
Visitor Check-In
Another layer of security added two years ago was the visitor check-in system at the security desks of all schools. Visitors should be prepared to present a valid state or military ID. In addition to serving as a check-in system to enter/exit buildings, this procedure also provides visitors badges so students and school staff can easily distinguish those visiting. Bus Safety
Do you know the Danger Zone around a bus? Do you know that parents or their designee should accompany students to the bus stop? Read these and other safety tips in the Student Code of Conduct and the Transportation page on vbschools.com.
Be Social. Be Smart. Be Safe.
A person’s social media footprint lives forever and can have lasting impacts on college admissions, careers and individuals. Threats online can also result in life-altering consequences. Learn about these topics and how to be a responsible digital citizen by visiting the school division’s Be Social. Be Smart. Be Safe. website. And remember, “If you see something, say something.”
