North Carolina students impacted by Hurricane Helene recently received a special delivery from Virginia Beach students.
Windsor Oaks Elementary teacher Melissa Messner looked for schools in Helene’s storm path and found Hall Fletcher Elementary in Asheville. It took several weeks of storm damage recovery before students there could return to school.
“I picked a school affected by the hurricane and reached out to their principal and asked if there was anything that our school could do or provide,” Messner said. “She wrote back and stated that they would love some letters and cards of encouragement for their students when they finally returned to school.”
Messner asked teachers at Windsor Oaks to have their students make cards and write letters. She then mailed the well wishes to Hall Fletcher Elementary.
“They received them about a week after they started back at school,” Messner said.
The Asheville school’s social media post, which pictures a smiling student holding up one of the cards, reads: “We received more welcome-back cards from @windsoroaksvb in Virginia Beach this week. We continue to be thankful for the support from other schools as our students and community continue to heal from the storm.”
