Norfolk Naval Shipyard organized a career fair Nov. 14 for students at the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center.
Shipyard representatives presented 10 departments that encompass various trades, engaging with students who are studying welding, automotive service, automotive body, outdoor power equipment, HVAC, electronics/robotics and construction.
Each class at the Tech Center rotated through the trade stations throughout the school building, with each rotation lasting about 10-15 minutes.
Shipyard employees shared valuable information about their respective trades and departments. Students benefited from an extensive overview of the shipyard, including the diverse employment opportunities available and the application process.
The Tech Center recently expanded its welding program with the “First Spark” lab and classroom to bridge the skills gap in the region’s shipbuilding industry. The $2 million investment is a collaboration between Virginia Beach City Public Schools, BlueForge Alliance and the Regional Maritime Training System powered by the Hampton Roads Workforce Council. An additional welding instructor was also added to the Tech Center’s staff.
