Congratulations to Salem High School senior Karson Ray for her achievement in the National PTA Reflections Contest.
Karson’s dance choreography entry, titled “Guidance,” earned her the prestigious Award of Excellence at the national level. This award is equivalent to second place in the nation.
The Reflections contest theme this year was “I am hopeful because…”
Students entered the competition at the school level, with winners advancing to regional and state competitions. Karson’s choreography won first place in both the regional and Virginia competitions.
Her national win comes with a prize package. She receives a $200 Young Artist Scholarship, a silver medal, a certificate of excellence and the honor of having her work featured in a virtual exhibition.
Karson’s growth as a choreographer over her high school career has been remarkable, according to her dance teacher at Salem’s Visual and Performing Arts Academy, Katie Flint.
“She consistently takes bold, innovative risks with her choreography, thinking outside the box and interpreting music in a profound way,” Flint said. “Her ability to accentuate the music and skillfully balance stillness with movement reveals a maturity far beyond her years. As a talented dancer herself, Karson choreographs with a depth and sophistication that sets her apart, creating compelling and intricate pieces that resonate on a high level.”
