Newtown Elementary School recently held its first African American Read-In Day.
Guests helped the school promote a culture of literacy by reading books to students. Among the visitors were guest authors, community members, Virginia Beach City Public Schools senior leadership, principals and assistant principals. A wall display helped students learn about notable authors of books, poetry and music.
Lacy Davis, the school’s library media specialist, was the curator of the culturally diverse collection of books. Here’s a sampling:
“Mae. C Jemison” by Meg Pincus
“I Am Every Good Thing” by Derrick Barnes
“We Are Here” by Tami Charles
“All Because You Matter” by Tami Charles
“Jordyn Discovers” by Jordyn Taylor
“I Can Do Hard Things” by Gabi Garcia
“Time for Time” by Sherry Jackson (author)
“Daddy Dressed Me” by Ava Gardner and Michael Gardner
“Harlem at Four” by Michael Datcher
Staff members at the school look forward to seeing distinguished guests again next year.
