“Born Great, Becoming Greater” is the theme for the Beach Girls Rock! (BGR) workshop to be held Saturday, Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to noon at Green Run High School. This is the first of three BGR events offered for Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ (VBCPS) female students in fifth through eighth grade. Students can register through their school counselors, or at Green Run High School Oct. 19 beginning at 8 a.m.
Sponsored by the division’s Office of Opportunity and Achievement and a host high school, each BGR workshop focuses on empowerment topics for young women, including healthy living, leadership and college and career readiness.
The keynote speakers for this workshop are graduates of Green Run High School; Dr. Veleka Gatling, former VBCPS executive director of programs for exceptional children and currently faculty of Old Dominion University; and Angelique Phillips, coordinator of the Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial High School. Afterward, students have several breakout sessions to choose from that will unleash their superpowers through hands-on and engaging activities.
Parents are also encouraged to attend the workshop, where they can talk to school division representatives, attend a parent panel discussion on high school life and hear about opportunities available at Green Run High School.
Following the October event, two more BGR workshop are scheduled for Dec. 14 at Kellam High School and Feb. 15, 2020, at Bayside High School, respectively. For more information about Beach Girls Rock! contact Dr. LaQuiche Parrott, director of opportunity and achievement, at 757-263-1218.
Are the children required to have an adult stay with them for these workshops?
No, but parents/guardians are welcome to attend the adult workshops offered during the same time.
