Select fifth-graders from Bettie F. Williams Elementary School woke up an extra morning last week to attend the school’s first Science Saturday of the school year. A series of three different Saturdays will occur throughout the school year to review, refine, and enhance student’s scientific investigation skills through a number of hands-on activities.

The December session included breakfast and a snack provided by Calvary Revival Church and a wide-range of science activities. These activities included a popcorn lab, a make your own harmonica station, ‘Going Fishing’ (a data collection activity) and an electricity review using conductors and insulators.

With 40 students and nearly 20 staff members participating, the small group atmosphere allowed for students to ask questions and gain better insight into each activity. Students were also able to take a majority of their projects home in order to continue sharpening their science investigation skills.

Additional Science Saturdays will take place in February and March.
