Students at Princess Anne High School are banking on a good future – literally.
Recently, student groups have been participating in a variety of financial planning exercises and competitions.
The school hosted a financial education workshop where business education students took part in the “Reality Store: Welcome to the Real World!” challenge. Students had to budget and plan financially based on an assigned family, job, income and education scenario. The “Reality Store” is a product of Virginia Cooperative Extension from Virginia Tech & Virginia State Universities. Supporting the VBCPS financial curriculum, the free program brings real world meaning to the concepts studied in class.
Amy Courtwright, Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union (VBSFCU) vice president of marketing, and Sarah Taylor, Beach Municipal Federal Credit Union marketing assistant, presented the activity, enlisting the help of numerous volunteers from the school’s volunteer bank.
The school also has been grooming some future titans of Wall Street.
Team Princess Anne High School swept first and second place in the Ninth Annual Stock Market Challenge held at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
The competition, sponsored by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Junior Achievement, had 106 teams of four students each from area public and private high schools enter into a technology-based game of stock portfolio management. At the end of the trading, PA’s teams had won by having the highest and second highest portfolio values grown from an initial $500,000 investment.
Keep up the great work, PA!
