At the annual VBCPS Kindergarten Registration event Tuesday, April 25, elementary school staffs across the division will welcome rising kindergartners and their parents/guardians at their new schools for next year. Attendees will get to take school tours, meet teachers and even ride a school bus while their parents register them for school.
However, the best advisers to these new students may be current kindergartners themselves. We visited Diamond Springs Elementary to get their advice for the incoming Class of 2030. Here’s what they said:
“I would tell them to be a leader, not to scream out or yell out the teacher’s name over and over again. And I would tell them to be humble and kind. I would tell them to be very, very good.” – Ashanti
“Kindergarten is about learning about trying to read and learning about spring stuff and learning about which verbs sound like ‘ch’ or ‘sh.’” – Rachel
“I would tell them I learned about clocks, money and reading books.” – Kyree
“I would tell them kindergarten is a fun place. You get to see yourself in the tv and get to see yourself dance in the tv.” – Antwan
“Sit quietly while the teacher is talking. Raise your hand when you want to say something to your teacher or if you have the flu you got to go to the nurse.” – Nicco
“I would say when they kick people, ‘Don’t kick people because that’s rude.’ You’re supposed to be humble and kind to other people and no kicking.” – Rashad
“It’s fun in kindergarten and we get to play math stations and we like to learn and read books.” – Lauren
“Raise your hand and be proactive.” – Taylah
“In kindergarten you learn. You have fun and you have a good day at school.” – Amara
“Use nice manners. Say please.” – Siraj
“I would say there’s lots of stuff to do and lots of fun things to do.” – Eva
“I would say be nice to people and if you’re nice to people they will maybe say yes.” – Justice

Thank you, Mrs. Coston, for instilling in your kindergarten students to always “focus and do excellent work.” Your building is one, when you walk in you feel welcomed and you are certain learning is taking place. I am a proud grandparent and employee of the VBCPS. Thank you to your faculty for keeping education relavent. Go DSES!
