It’s always a great day in the Happy Day Café! Just ask the students who work there and their regular customers who always leave with a smile.
The café has two locations, operating at the school division’s Laskin Road Annex and Plaza Annex, and provides work experience opportunities for high school students with disabilities. Happy Day “employees” prepare and serve food for purchase by annex staff members. Job coaches from the Office of Programs for Exceptional Children (OPEC) support students, helping them develop and practice many skills valuable to becoming employed and fully participating in the community.
At a year-end celebration to honor the students who have worked in the Happy Day Café this school year, Kempsville High School student John Carvil spoke to the guests and announced that he was giving all staff an A+ for their hard work. This is Carvil’s last year working at the Happy Day Café and he will be missed by many of the café regulars and OPEC staff.
Everyone enjoyed pizza, ice cream and, of course, lots of smiles at the Happy Day Café celebration. For more photos from the happy occasion, click on the images below.
Great program! Mr. Malsch and his job coaches do a wonderful job with our students. Congratulations on another successful year.
