First Colonial High School (FCHS) senior Melissa Toman has spent the better part of her time in the Legal Studies Academy researching the unethical practices in factory farms.
As an academy student, Toman was mandated not only to research the legalities and current legislation facing factory farms, but she also had to get the community involved through some sort of project.
To highlight the ample amount of local farming available to the Virginia Beach community, Toman held an open house with a forum with representatives from local farms and organizations, including Full Quiver Farm, New Earth Farm, Pleasure House Oysters, Buy Fresh Buy Local and Whole Foods.
More than 90 people came out to Kellam High School to hear from the panelists as well as to try out some of the food, produce and products made right here in the region. Check out some of the photos from the event below:
