The school division’s specialty centers, gifted school, academies and advanced academic programs have hosted events throughout the fall to provide students and families with more information about academic options during their elementary, middle and high school years.
Admission to these academic programs is application-based and information about application processes and deadlines is available on vbschools.com. Below is a summary of upcoming deadlines and information nights.
Specialty Center Information Nights
Two of the school division’s high school specialty centers, the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) and the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center, are hosting information nights for prospective students in January and February respectively.
The ATC is hosting an open house for middle and high school students Jan. 4, 2017, from 5:30-8 p.m. More information about the ATC and its application, due Jan. 27, 2017, is available on the ATC website.
Middle and high school students are also invited to the Technical and Career Education Center’s open house Feb. 8, 2017, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Visit the center’s website to learn more about the 22 career programs available to high school juniors and seniors.
High School Academies
The online application deadline for the following high school academies and advanced academic programs is Monday, Jan. 9, 2017:
- Entrepreneurship and Business Academy at Kempsville High School
- Global Studies and World Languages Academy at Tallwood High School
- Governor’s STEM and Technology Academy at Landstown High School
- Health Sciences Academy at Bayside High School
- International Baccalaureate Program at Princess Anne High School
- Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial High School
- Mathematics and Science Academy at Ocean Lakes High School
- Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Salem High School

Middle and Elementary School Programs
Applications for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program at Plaza Middle School are available online and are due Feb. 1, 2017. More information about the program of study is available on vbschools.com and Plaza Middle School’s website.
Admission to Old Donation School, the division’s centralized gifted school, or to the Gifted Visual Arts or Gifted Dance Education programs, require that students meet the division’s criteria for gifted identification. More information about Old Donation School, the two gifted programs and the application process is available on vbschools.com. The application deadline for students in grades 2-7 is Feb. 1, 2017. The application deadline for first-grade applications to Old Donation School is March 1, 2017.
