For a group of Virginia Beach Middle School students, the last days of summer break brought more than just sunshine. They brought the chance to ride the surf at the brand-new Atlantic Park Surf attraction, which provided free lessons on opening day.
Joining them was Jason Borte, who taught sixth grade English at VBMS in the 1990s. The longtime surf coach has partnered with the school for the past five years, giving students who might not otherwise have access to surfing the chance to experience the sport firsthand.

Students learned balance, technique and confidence on the waves.
School counselor Lesley Groves and history teacher Logan Sample help select students for the program and also joined them at the park.
“Our students had an incredible experience, and it was a meaningful way to connect them with a unique opportunity they might not otherwise have,” said Sample, who mentors several of the participants.
