“Acts of Kindness” tree at Lynnhaven Elementary grows and grows
Pictured are Easton Sinclair (fourth grader) and Diane Duval (fifth grader). Diane said when she learned about the tree she knew exactly which students to write about. She submitted multiple hearts for acts of kindness shown to her.
As part of the Great Kindness Challenge, Lynnhaven Elementary school counselor Shanice Williams made an “Acts of Kindness” tree.
Staff and students write on a paper heart how someone was kind to them or an act of kindness they witnessed.
The school has a four-house system where all staff and students are sorted into a house. Williams takes the hearts and puts the house color associated with the student who was caught being kind behind the note written about them.
The kindness tree grows and blooms.
Geri Scherck is an instructional technology specialist and school media liaison at Lynnhaven Elementary.
La’Monte Mitchell (first grade) was caught being kind and smiling at other students in the hallway by Mrs. Mary Jane Cowen (office associate). When a staff member told him that he was “caught” and had a heart, he got the biggest smile on his face. He said, “Can you send a picture to my mom? She is going to be proud of me!”Pictured is Mele’ane Hunkin-Walters (5th grader). Someone wrote an anonymous ‘heart’ to her after she helped them with their math work.Skylar Bland – fourth gradeBria Holliday – fifth gradeGrayson Japson – fifth grade

I had not paid attention to this until now. What an awesome project and this makes me all fuzzy inside to see students actively engaging in writing kind messages to one another. I will look at the wall upon our return to school to see the progress and maybe write a message too.
