Woodstock teacher receives first “Knocked My Socks Off” award

Theresa Holloran, first-grade teacher at Woodstock Elementary, received the “Knocked My Socks Off” award from Virginia Beach City Public Schools Superintendent Aaron Spence.

Spence, who was at Woodstock for a visit, had stopped by Holloran’s classroom while she was conducting a math lesson and was impressed with what he observed. After that visit, Spence named Holloran as the first teacher recipient of the award, previously given only to administrators.

In a handwritten note that accompanied the award, Spence told Holloran that she had “knocked his socks off” during that classroom visit when he witnessed an inspiring example of a safe space where students could make mistakes and learn from them. He added that he was also impressed by the sense of warmth and collaboration among her first-grade students. In addition to a certificate and personal note, a pair of neon pink socks was also presented to Holloran.

Holloran is a 25-year veteran teacher, with 11 years in Virginia Beach. She was named Teacher of the Year for Woodstock Elementary in 2013.

  1. It’s nice to see that “Conscious Discipline” is still going on in the school division. Way to go Theresa on integrating the teachings of Becky Bailey into your classroom.

  2. Mrs. Holloran is an OUTSTANDING teacher. When my first grader was headed into the first grade a lot of (seasoned) moms told me that they hoped my son got Mrs. Holloran; well he did and we love her. We love her classroom style, we love her style and my six year old boy looks forward to his days with Mrs. Holloran; he loves her! Congratulations Theresa!!! It is exciting that you are the very first teacher to receive the award yet not a big surprise 🙂
