Headlines 2013-14: Virginia Beach staff in the news

Check out the following staff members who have authored or been featured in recent publications:

  • Ed Gibbs, a fifth-grade teacher at Three Oaks Elementary, wrote a column for the News and Features section of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) web site. The ARRL is the national organization of ham radio operators. Gibbs is the vice president of the Virginia Beach Amateur Radio Club, and his column is about how he is implementing Virginia Beach’s Professional Learning Community concept in his leadership.
  • Jennifer Carson, world languages coordinator for the VBCPS, and Shirley Hall, a Latin teacher at Ocean Lakes High School, were interview for an article in The Language Educator, published by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The article features their interview regarding the division’s BYOD policy and technology usage in general.
  • Brandon Thompson, a kindergarten teacher at Diamond Springs Elementary, was featured in an article in the The Virginian-Pilot for his unique thank you to the Hampton Roads area. For supporting his work as an artist, Thompson left free pieces of art at various sites in the region.
  • Renaissance Academy English teacher Ronel Brewer was interviewed by WAVY TV for his participation in the 46th Annual Toyota Charity Bowl.
  • Teresa Austin, Library Media Specialist at Fairfield Elementary, wrote an article called “Website Evaluation:  Easy as A-B-C” that was published in the January 2014 edition of the School Library Monthly.
  • Nancy Rae Habit, middle school art teacher at Renaissance Academy, used a cascading waterfall to win the inaugural Roll Out the Rain Barrel design contest, sponsored by the Chesapeake Master Gardeners.  Check out the full story from the Beacon.
  • Cindy Kube, Gifted Resource Teacher at Salem High School, wrote an article about incorporating checklists with rubrics and it was published in ASCD Express.
  • Natalie Cutler, coordinator for Operation PRIDE, was featured in this month’s Military Child Education Coalition newsletter.
  • Renaissance Academy teacher Maia Chaka is featured in an USA Today article about female referees in professional football.

  1. Ed Gibbs is an amazing educator, both as teacher and administrator. He is a great asset for our school division. When he was a parent of two advanced children at Windsor Woods School he donated much time and treasure to help skills building in the classrooms.
