The Integrated Performance Task (IPT) is a locally-developed assessment that has been administered twice annually to all VBCPS fourth- and seventh-grade students for the past five school years. The IPT provides teachers and schools with an indication of their students’ critical-thinking, problem-solving, and writing abilities.
Every summer since 2011, a cadre of approximately 100 teachers and other 10-month VBCPS staff have met at the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) to score the responses of more than 10,000 students. Individual student results are posted on Parent Portal and aggregate results are used to gauge school and division progress on the VBCPS strategic plan.
This year, nearly half of the 98 IPT scorers who arrived for work at ATC were honored in front of their peers. Forty-five staff members received pins and ribbons to commemorate their fifth year as IPT scorers.
“Maintaining a well-trained staff of scorers is the main reason for the IPT’s reliability, which keeps improving every year,” said Dr. Doug Wren, who has managed the development and scoring of the IPT since 2010.

I am very proud of the work of this dedicated group of educators. Under the leadership of Dr. Doug Wren, the IPT has become engrained in the fabric of performance assessment in VBCPS and has gained interest from other school districts from across the Commonwealth and the United States. To date, we have shared released IPT assessments with more than 20 school divisions as well as with the SOL Innovation Committee this past year. Congratulations and thank you to all those who support this meaningful measure of a student’s globally competitive skills.
