Askew earns VBPD distinction

Kempsville Elementary’s Moira Askew received a certificate of appreciation recently from the Virginia Beach Police Department.

Askew, and her daughter Mariah Smith, a 2012 Kempsville High School graduate, started the organization Blankets for the Homeless Hampton Roads in October 2011 and have already distributed more than 40,000 blankets and hand-packed bagged lunches to people living on the streets, as well as coats, hats, gloves, clothes, shoes, backpacks, tents and toiletries.

Askew has had numerous speaking engagements at schools, churches, businesses, and other local organizations. Five nights a week the mother/daughter team distribute 50 blankets and lunches to people living on the streets – not fortunate enough to get into shelters.

While on a routine run to collect blankets at one of their drop box locations, the Virginia Beach Police Department’s First Precinct surprised Askew and her daughter each with a certificate of appreciation for their dedication and committment to the people of Virigina Beach.

Kempsville Elementary and Kempsville High School were among the first drop box locations and still are, but now more than 20 other schools help support Blankets for the Homeless Hampton Roads as well.

Way to go!

  1. I read this Kaleidoscope article with great satisfaction. It was wonderful to hear of a worthy person being recognized for outstanding personal effort for an important and worthwhile charitable activity. Ms. Askew’s efforts are making an immediate difference in the lives of less fortunate persons. I recognize and appreciate her dedicated service to persons in need.
