The job of principal, according to students

Governor Terry McAuliffe has designated Jan. 24-30 as Virginia Principals Appreciation Week. We asked some Kid Principals, first-grade and second-grade students, about their perceptions of the job as well as what they think principals do for fun. If you guessed that principals “watch Nickelodeon” and “play football” for fun, you’re correct!

Here are more student thoughts, in their own words.

What’s the best part of being a principal?

“You can make the school a better place.”

“You get to walk around the school and check on the kids.”

“Giving kids hugs.”

“You can be the boss of everybody.”

“You can have fun with the kids.”

“Taking kids out of the school who have been bad.”

“You own a school, and you can help kids learn and get an education.”

“Helping kids make friends.”

“You get to tell people compliments and go around the school.”

“You can tell everyone to be nice.”

“I think the best thing about being a principal would be that they get some peace and quiet.”

What’s the most difficult part of a principal’s job?

“You have to go to meetings.”

“Being mad at kids.”

“Doing all the work!”

“Giving kids math stuff to do by themselves because then you have to get food from the cafeteria for the kids.”

“The hardest part, I think, is that some kids are bad and you have to get their attention.”

“When they’re tired.”

“When you have to tell kids that don’t listen something over and over again.”

“Sometimes you have to be a little a hard on kids if they do a few things wrong.”

“The worst part of being a principal is that you have to wake up really early.”

“There’s too much paperwork.”

“Staying in their office and working hard.”

“Calling everybody’s mom.”

“I would let everybody have a Dorito Day.”

“Take a nap.”

“Tell everyone to be nice.”

“Let kids have pets in the school.”

“Every Friday I would let the kids have 20 minutes of reading and drawing time.”

“Tell people to be quiet and do their work.”

“Tell kids to play fairly.”

“I would let everybody choose when to get out of school.”

“Some days I would let the teachers be the kids and the kids be the teacher. Opposite day!”

“I would let kids make up their own clubs.”

“On Monday, the hardest day of the week, I would let them do whatever they wanted.”

“I would give them a better education.”

“I would eat ice cream in my office.”

“The worst part of being a principal is that you have to wake up really early.”
