FACT: VBCPS developed more consistent grading practices from class to class.
As far back as 2010, school leaders had talked about grading practices in Virginia Beach and ways to ensure that fair and consistent measures were in place. Parents would often note that practices varied from teacher to teacher, which was not only challenging for students, but also, in some cases, inequitable. In 2016, through the work of a task force, town hall meetings and an online survey, VBCPS directed that each school – either by grade level, department, or specialized course – develop grading expectations to be used in their classrooms. These grading expectations were also reviewed by the school’s instructional leadership team as well as the Department of School Leadership to ensure they were aligned with the division’s overarching grading guidelines. As a result, VBCPS has developed more consistent grading practices from class to class within a school.
