First grade students at Windsor Woods Elementary have been learning about reducing, reusing, and recycling. After listening to the story The Dumpster Diver by Janet Wong, good sport Xavier Bailey, from Mrs. Kelly’s class, donned dumpster diver attire and went to work.
Bailey selected ten items from the makeshift “dumpster” and displayed the selected items for the class. Students then chose two-10 items from Bailey’s selection and put their imaginations to work creating entirely new objects from the dumpster treasurers. Each child drew his creation, wrote a description of it, and told how he/she would use it. The illustrations and descriptions of their awesome new inventions showcased that creativity, when it comes to reusing “trash,” is alive and well in young students’ minds!
