Although programs are in place year-round, Virginia Beach schools marked Anti-Bullying Month in January by encouraging students to take a stand against bullying.
Throughout the division, children took part in special exercises, had new reading material and were part of classroom activities that showcased the adverse effects bullying has on their fellow students.
Not only has bullying been shown to cause self-esteem issues in children, it also can lead to decreased school performance and, in some cases, depression.
