VBCPS celebrates Anti-Bullying Month

Although programs are in place year-round, Virginia Beach schools marked Anti-Bullying Month in January by encouraging students to take a stand against bullying.

Students from Mrs. Thomson's first grade class at John B Dey Elementary made a pledge not to bully and made buttons to wear too. Pictured from left to right are Karsyn Hester, Madison Jeffreys and Trevin Griffith.

Throughout the division, children took part in special exercises, had new reading material and were part of classroom activities that showcased the adverse effects bullying has on their fellow students.

Not only has bullying been shown to cause self-esteem issues in children, it also can lead to decreased school performance and, in some cases, depression.
