Every year, the Adult Learning Center (ALC) librarian Sonny Stowe hosts Talk-A-Latte. This gives students in different levels a chance to come together, have a cookie and coffee, and discuss the topic of the event.
This is especially beneficial for the ESOL students as it provides a relaxed atmosphere to practice English skills. The theme of Talk-A-Latte this year was our park system. The uniqueness of our national, state and local parks was highlighted by discussing the different kinds of parks: historical (i.e. Jamestown), natural (i.e. the Grand Canyon), battlefields (i.e. Gettysburg), and those for recreation like Mt. Trashmore.
Those parks were also compared to theme parks like Busch Gardens and Disney World. A great time was had by all. Students from other countries were encourage to tell about parks in their homelands.
