The first day of school is not until Tuesday, Sept. 8, but families can save money this weekend on school supplies and clothing needed for the new school year.
Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9, is a sales tax holiday enacted by the Virginia General Assembly, and consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing and footwear without paying sales tax. According to the Virginia Department of Taxation website, qualified school supplies are $20 or less per item, and qualifying clothing and footwear cost $100 or less per item. A detailed list of eligible items is available on the department’s website here.
Additionally, select hurricane and emergency preparedness items as well as Energy Star and WaterSense products qualify for the sales tax exemption. More information about these qualifying items is available on the Virginia Department of Taxation website here.
