“You See a Girl, I See the Future” is the theme for the first Beach Girls Rock! (BGR) workshop of the 2017-2018 school year. Held Saturday, Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at Landstown High School, it is one of three BGR workshops offered this year for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) female students in grades 5-8. Sessions for parents are also offered at each workshop.
Sponsored by the division’s Office of Opportunity and Achievement and a host high school, each BGR event focuses on empowerment topics for young women, including healthy living, leadership, and college and career readiness. Organizers of the first workshop are planning student breakout sessions that will include exposure to CrossFit, forensics with the Virginia Beach Police Department, and robotics and engineering activities. Parent sessions will feature information about ninth-grade transition, career and college awareness, social media and cyberbullying, and STEM opportunities for students.
Each workshop also features a keynote speaker. 13News Now meteorologist Iisha Scott will welcome attendees to the Nov. 18 BGR event in an opening session. Scott is involved with several youth mentoring programs and serves as the president of Hampton Roads Media Professionals, the local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications from Norfolk State University and also holds a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences/Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University.
Following the Nov. 18 workshop, the following two BGR workshops are also scheduled:
- Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at First Colonial High School
- Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Ocean Lakes High School
Students can register for one or all of the events at their individual schools through their school counselor.
