In the wake of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, schools and community organizations across the country are collecting supplies and donations to help storm victims. Here in Virginia Beach, many families have contacted our schools to see how they can support these efforts.

According to the Houston Independent School District, the best way to help their 218,000 students is to make a financial donation to the HISD Education Foundation. When you click the “Donate Now” button, be sure to specify “Harvey” as the purpose for the donation.
In Florida, families are just beginning to assess the damage in their communities to determine what assistance they need. However, the Red Cross is encouraging people who wish to help to make a financial contribution through a reputable organization. This will allow storm victims to purchase food, water, medication and supplies that are most needed.
In Virginia Beach, we are fortunate that we were spared by Hurricane Irma. But the storm served as an important reminder that we must all be prepared during hurricane season. As a reminder, when inclement weather occurs, any changes to school operations will be communicated to families through Alert Now phone calls, emails and texts. Make sure your contact information is up to date at your child’s school to ensure you receive these messages throughout the year.
