Business professionals from the Cape Henry Rotary Club visited Bayside Middle School recently to make a new friend. Club president Armond Reich told members about the school’s need for mentors, and they volunteered.
Member Ashley McLeod said their goal is for each volunteer to meet with his or her student once a week during school hours. To kick off the program, McLeod, Reich, Willie Kee, Loraine Kohart, and Kathy Jeffries introduced themselves to their student and discovered their interests.
Debra Defoor, counseling department chair, said currently she is matching 50 students with adults who volunteer to become mentors.
Other volunteers come from Zim American Integrated Shipping Services Co., Inc., Virginia Wesleyan College, and EOD Support Unit Junior Enlisted Association as well as the faculty.
