They sent out the call and you answered the challenge! On Thursday, schools, student clubs, civic organizations, community partners and kind-hearted citizens helped fight hunger in the Virginia Beach community by supporting the “Fill a Beach Bag, Feed a Beach Child” food drive.
“It was a frigid and windy day, but we were warmed by the generosity of our community,” said Eileen M. Cox, director of communications and community engagement for VBCPS. “Thanks to their kindness, hundreds of children in our schools will receive healthy weekend meals this winter.”
Donations allowed VBCPS to sort and/or pack enough food for 900 Beach Bags. In addition, the food drive received $1,200 in monetary donations, including a $500 grant from Kohl’s! Check out a gallery of photos featuring generous donors and business partners on the VBSchools Facebook page!
The Beach Bags program provides meals and healthy snacks to students who may not have enough to eat over weekends and school breaks. Since the program began in 2010, more than 19,000 bags have been given out to children across the school division.
DId you miss Thursday’s drive? Don’t worry, the School Administration Building accepts donations each week! Visit vbschools.com for more information on the items needed to pack each Beach Bag.
Would like more info on this program. Virginia Beach Town Center Blind Lions are always on the lookout to help within our community on projects. Do you have a set date for the next food drive & how often? Would like to present this to the club to get it approved.
