{"id":9370,"date":"2019-11-13T15:14:02","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T20:14:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=9370"},"modified":"2019-12-04T11:33:47","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T16:33:47","slug":"students-win-national-internet-safety-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/students-win-national-internet-safety-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Students win national internet safety competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not every day that students get a visit from an FBI agent, but that is happening Nov. 15 as a reward for Salem Middle School (SMS) students winning first place in a nationwide Safe Online Surfing (SOS) Challenge sponsored by the agency for the month of September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy supervisor from career and technical education sent us this email [about the contest] and I thought this sounded fun and we won,\u201d stated Lynsey Slaughter, computer science teacher.<\/p>\n<p>The competition required students to answer 30-40 questions designed to promote students\u2019 web literacy and safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the questions were about what to do if an adult tries to talk to you and you don\u2019t know them,\u201d eighth grader Madeline Avueg shared. \u201cIt\u2019s like common sense safety and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow eighth grader Tristan Jones said that answer would be to \u201cmake sure not to give out your personal information because it\u2019s how predators find you. You never want to disclose your full name or location to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6664.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9367 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6664-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6664-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6664-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6664-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6664-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also taught you about a good profile: what to share and not to share,\u201d according to eighth grader Chloe Hardison.<\/p>\n<p>Classmate Michael Kosteczko agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe user names don\u2019t show your personal information,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Both Slaughter and students shared that they learned about online safety from both their class and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me it was common knowledge because I grew up in a home where I was taught to be careful online, but I thought the test was really good because it was a good reminder as we are getting older and getting more responsibility.
