{"id":8878,"date":"2019-03-19T16:16:39","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T20:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=8878"},"modified":"2019-03-26T10:06:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T14:06:05","slug":"students-intern-with-two-top-area-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/students-intern-with-two-top-area-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Students intern with two top area businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Advanced Technology Center (ATC) provided six students with a unique hands-on experience by connecting them with two local companies, STIHL Inc. and IMS Gear.<\/p>\n<p>Brenden Fritz, Austin Koontz and Xavier Scott were selected for an internship with the portable outdoor power equipment company, STIHL Inc., while fellow students Dulio Carrillo, Kyle Boardman and Zack Kopp were chosen to intern at IMS Gear, a company known for manufacturing gears for major automobile companies internationally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8876 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese on-site experiences provide the students with real-world opportunities to apply the skills we cover in class and learn new skills from professionals in the industry,\u201d said Dr. James Barger, engineering technology instructor at ATC. \u201cThe entire experience lasts two days a week for a total of eight weeks, ending the week leading up to spring break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students were required to fill out an application, show their professional resume and current high school transcripts, provide a writing sample and be interviewed by company employees.<\/p>\n<p>Coming from a family of engineers, Koontz was glad to continue the tradition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up my dad was an engineer, so I\u2019ve always been more interested in working with my hands. Instead of reading about it in a book, I\u2019d rather physically do the work. Internships like this allow a hands-on experience in the workplace to see if it\u2019s really for you,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to think about a job field if you haven\u2019t experienced it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8877 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo2-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For senior Carrillo, this opportunity fit well into his <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.vbschools.com\/curriculum\/academic\/index.asp\">academic and career plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince I\u2019m graduating this year, I was really interested in participating in an internship where I could possibly work after finishing school,\u201d he said. \u201cI plan to apply for the apprenticeship program with IMS Gear. I can really see myself at IMS and looking forward to continuing my work there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the two IMS mentors the interns shadowed, one was a fellow VBCPS and ATC graduate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing that he was in the same place I am right now feels good,\u201d said Carrillo. \u201cMaybe this time next year I\u2019ll be the one mentoring ATC interns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barger hopes that students gain a connection between what they are learning from the curriculum and the actual experiences in the workforce. \u201cThis program is an opportunity for our students to experience what it will be like to be on the job in a field that they have interest in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8881 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Photo3-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scott said his time at STIHL has done just that. \u201cThis internship showed me how different the workplace is from school. It\u2019s very different. What I like most is getting to ask questions from someone in the field you are interested in \u2013 on the spot. So, with this internship, I thought it would be a great way to experience different areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In previous years, only second-year ATC engineering students were invited to apply for internships. This year, Barger welcomed first-year students to apply as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter meeting with and discussing the internship program with both STIHL and IMS Gear, both felt that juniors and seniors could benefit from the internship experience at their company,\u201d Barger said.<\/p>\n<p>Both STIHL and IMS Gear have offered internship spots for VBCPS students for the past several years.
