She was a female athlete, playing field hockey in college. With the tough physical demands she was facing, the students had to ensure her nutritional needs were being met \u2013 getting enough calories and protein to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>The twist?<\/p>\n<p>She was also a vegan, and could not eat any animal product or byproduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learned a lot about the vegan diet. It was very difficult,\u201d said Cade \u201cShe was 5\u20198. She weighed 140 pounds, so we had to give her calories and protein and everything, but she\u2019s vegan so we had to give it like in protein powders and supplements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8651 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Miles was one of the freshmen students who took part in Kellam High School\u2019s Bio Fit Exhibition of Learning Monday. It was the culmination of a monthslong partnership between students in physical education (P.E.) and biology courses. Seeing the overlap between the two curriculums, P.E. and biology teachers worked together on how students could apply their learning in the classroom to real-life scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>They did so via energy balance projects, specific cases that required dietary and fitness guidance to meet the specific goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody who wanted to lose weight, someone who wanted to gain weight, they had to create a meal plan and a workout plan for their scenario,\u201d said Kellam P.E. Teacher Deborah Strausbaugh. \u201cThey created their driving questions. We didn\u2019t create anything for them. It was all them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8652 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-2-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students spent time in both classes researching nutritional guidelines and the impact of physical activity on metabolism and weight loss. Teachers brought in guests from Pivot Physical Therapy as well as the division\u2019s Office of Food Services to talk through their expertise in personal training and food preparation, and they gave students some best practices to consider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our were diving in, they were able to go over and have a conversation with a community partner,\u201d Strausbaugh said. \u201cThen, they would come back to us and say, \u2018You shouldn\u2019t lose but only a week.\u2019 And, I\u2019m like, \u2018Yeah, you found that out.\u2019 Then, they shifted their research and then they had to redirect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anica Perez and Marissa Zmuda had to work a plan for a 15-year-old wrestler who was trying to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of wrestlers, to drop their weight, they stop eating; they run in sweats,\u201d Perez said. The freshmen put together a program that included incorporating more rest days and getting more water after workouts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis gives him a healthy alternative to lose the weight without it being unhealthy,\u201d Perez added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8653 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-3.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"743\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-3.jpg 743w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-3-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-3-400x187.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 743px) 100vw, 743px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As part of their presentation, the girls brought in some of the homemade snacks they recommended in their plans: peanut butter and honey granola topped with Greek yogurt and fruit as well as turkey sandwiches that used cucumber slices for bread.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout Kellam\u2019s cafeteria, more than two dozen stations were set up, with students eagerly describing their scenarios as well as their ascribed plans and thought processes. Volunteers from the West Neck Educators Association and the division\u2019s Department of Teaching and Learning joined Pivot volunteers and Food Services staff to hear the students\u2019 research, give feedback and rate the effectiveness of their plans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8654 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-4-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo-4-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kellam began the Bio Fit class together last year, building it this year to the Exhibition of Learning event. They also have shared their insights with colleagues at Bayside and Landstown high schools, who have recently started the same collaborative program.<\/p>\n<p>For staff it has been an opportunity to further engage young learners. For the students themselves, it\u2019s helping make the cross-curricular relationship of their school day more apparent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it makes the connection much more clear because you learn about cells and stuff and nutrition and how it works in biology and you know the outcomes of it in health,\u201d Zmuda said. \u201cI think it\u2019s easier for me to understand it that way because I can see the connection very clear.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Their case study was a difficult one.
