{"id":8077,"date":"2018-07-19T15:24:10","date_gmt":"2018-07-19T19:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=8077"},"modified":"2018-11-05T16:08:47","modified_gmt":"2018-11-05T21:08:47","slug":"creeds-elementary-school-club-knits-for-a-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/creeds-elementary-school-club-knits-for-a-cause\/","title":{"rendered":"Creeds Elementary School club knits for a cause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of elementary school students have taken inspiration from a former Virginia Beach City Public Schools volunteer to help a local senior center.<\/p>\n<p>Diana Berning spent nearly a decade volunteering as a field-day chaperone, Standards of Learning (SOL) hall monitor and, most notably, coaching a group of student knitters at several elementary schools. It was at Cooke Elementary School that Casey Conger, principal of Creeds Elementary School, first met Berning and was introduced to the idea of a knitting club.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8073 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image1-1024x859.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image1-1024x859.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image1-300x252.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image1-768x644.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image1-400x336.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image1.jpg 1535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe and I got very close,\u201d said Conger. \u201cAfter she passed away, her sons gave me her knitting needles, so I knew I had to continue the tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Berning\u2019s memory, Conger started the Creeds Knitting Club at the beginning of July and it has quickly gained interest from current and former students, as well as staff. There is a standing open invitation for anyone in the Creeds community to join them Tuesdays at 10 a.m. throughout the summer break.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8074 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image2-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With more than 13 years of experience knitting, Conger knows how to handle a pair of knitting needles. She leads the club alongside Debbie Brooks, Creeds office manager, who has been knitting most of her life. Together they help everyone in the room, as needed, when it\u2019s time to start a new row, close a loop, or start a new stitch.<\/p>\n<p>Now that Madison Wilson knows how to knit, the rising fifth-grader has big plans for her next project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8075 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image3-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to make a blanket for my baby brother \u2013 he\u2019s 2 &#8211; so he\u2019s warm and cozy when he\u2019s sleeping,\u201d she said as she added another row to her blanket square.<\/p>\n<p>Each participant can either use knitting needles or a loom to create a blanket square, which will later be combined and made into several lap blankets they will donate to the Senior Resource Center down the street.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8076 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image4-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Image4-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The squares aren\u2019t identical. Some are small, some are big, some have an extra row and some have holes, but this doesn\u2019t discourage the knitters. It only inspires them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerfection is boring,\u201d said Conger. \u201cThere are no mistakes.
