{"id":7743,"date":"2018-05-01T16:35:24","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T20:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=7743"},"modified":"2025-05-09T14:10:24","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T18:10:24","slug":"vbcps-grad-featured-certification-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/vbcps-grad-featured-certification-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"VBCPS grad featured in Certification Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the April 2018 issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/certmag.com\/certified-driven-young-man-follows-virginia-texas\/\">Certification Magazine<\/a>, Virginia Beach City Public Schools graduate Chris Hultin credits both certifications and an Advanced Technology Center (ATC) instructor for his successful career in information technology (IT).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Certification-Magazine.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7739 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Certification-Magazine.png\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"813\" height=\"1003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Certification-Magazine.png 813w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Certification-Magazine-243x300.png 243w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Certification-Magazine-768x947.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Certification-Magazine-400x493.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 813px) 100vw, 813px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his \u201cPeople in Certification\u201d profile of Hultin, associate editor Calvin Harper wrote:<\/p>\n<p><em>Hultin credits certifications for helping him land a valuable IT internship with an architectural firm. \u201cEarning certs while in high school is awesome,\u201d he said. \u201cWhile certifications aren\u2019t a substitute for experience, they are a great way to get your foot in the door for tech jobs, especially if you don\u2019t have any experience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWithout the knowledge behind the certifications, I probably wouldn\u2019t have gotten my internship.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 2012 graduate of Kellam High School and ATC Network Administration and Cybersecurity student also credits ATC instructor Linda Lavender for his post-graduate success.<\/p>\n<p>Hultin told Harper: \u201cTruthfully, I would not be where I am if not for her,\u201d he said. \u201cShe is always helpful, always willing to share knowledge, and just a great teacher. I owe her a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the article, the now-Texas resident visits the ATC at least twice a year \u201cjust to say hello, talk to students about IT and take Lavender to a well-deserved lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After studying computer science Old Dominion University for two years, Hultin left Virginia to join the IT workforce in Austin, Texas. Harper\u2019s article spotlights Hultin\u2019s climb up the corporate ladder in Rackspace. In Hultin\u2019s current position as a Linux Systems Engineer at ObjectRocket, a subsidiary of Rackspace, \u201che helps with the architecting and automating of new systems and building a foundation for the next generation of products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Certification Magazine<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>is described as \u201ca technical training and certification publication\u2026[<\/strong><em>that]<\/em> examines career options and profiles educators and professionals who lead the industry.\u201d Harper ends his profile of Hultin by sharing the 23-year-old\u2019s advice for others starting out in IT. \u201cTake advantage of every opportunity you have, even if you think they have small chance to succeed.
