{"id":7445,"date":"2018-03-07T09:41:36","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T14:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=7445"},"modified":"2018-11-05T16:14:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-05T21:14:51","slug":"vbcps-celebrates-read-across-america-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/vbcps-celebrates-read-across-america-day\/","title":{"rendered":"VBCPS celebrates Read Across America Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Derrick Hobson had the full attention of the classroom as he began reading \u201cOne Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.\u201d Excited first-graders at Windsor Oaks Elementary School listened as Hobson read his favorite Dr. Seuss book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one,\u201d Hobson read aloud to the class. \u201cEvery day, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hobson was among nine sailors at Windsor Oaks for \u201cRead Across America Day.\u201d More than 180 sailors were reading at 20 elementary schools in Virginia Beach.<\/p>\n<p>The annual reading program is usually celebrated on March 2 to honor the birthday of children\u2019s author Dr. Seuss. This year, some schools celebrated a few days early when sailors stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln asked to come read at schools across Hampton Roads.<\/p>\n<p>Windsor Oaks was one of 79 elementary schools throughout Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk and Suffolk the Navy visited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDays like this give the children the opportunity to see how enjoyable reading can be, and prove to them that it\u2019s alright if you stumble while reading aloud,\u201d said Becky Feld, library media specialist at Windsor Oaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne gentleman got tongue-tied, but just laughed it off and started over, and provided a great learning experience for the children,\u201d said Feld. \u201cIt\u2019s OK to make mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools in Virginia Beach hosted guest readers and reading activities while students and teachers dressed as their favorite literary character to honor this beloved author.
