Kempsville High School’s Matt Wrocklage placed first in the regional 2013 Chemistry Olympiad, sponsored by the Hampton Roads Section of the American Chemical Society and the National Science Foundation Meta-PREM project at Norfolk State University.<\/p>\n

Senior Nate Shue as well as juniors Wrocklage, David Hallo, Kelli Green and Ben Clarke also took part in the competition, which involves a two-hour exam taken against other students from the region.<\/p>\n

The highest scores from Hampton Roads took another exam and then took part in a lab practical to qualify for the national rounds.<\/p>\n

While no student from Hampton Roads advanced to the national level of the competition, Kempsville chemistry teacher Maureen Morse said it is thrilling to have students just participate. She added that Wrocklage began the school’s Chemistry Club, and it has been exciting to see students engage with the subject.<\/p>\n

“I am thrilled at the level of interest in the Chemistry Olympiad this year by Kempsville students,” Morse said. “The students involved are wonderfully creative and incredibly hard-working and I am proud of them all. This is certainly not my achievement – it belongs totally to these great students.”<\/p>\n
