The event is the culmination of a yearlong initiative that engages students in grades K-12 in afterschool STEM activities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6771\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students worked together in teams to compete in one of three Trifecta events \u2013 Cyber Innovation and Security Challenge, Maker Challenge and Robotics Challenge. Award winners were named in each category after various rounds of competition.<\/p>\n<p>In the Cyber Innovation and Security Challenge, new last year, elementary and middle school students had to identify an unmet or undermet need in education that could be solved using programming. Student teams developed their solution using the Raspberry Pi as their platform and Scratch or Python coding and presented a working prototype and digital story to judges at the Trifecta. At the high school level, students worked in teams of two to three people to secure and defend a digital infrastructure against security threats and exploited vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6772\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/STEM-Trifecta-photo-2-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The following teams won awards in the Cyber Innovation and Security Challenge:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elementary School Cyber Innovation Awards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Place: CodeMasters, Strawbridge Elementary<\/li>\n<li>Second Place: Bayside Survivors, Bayside Elementary<\/li>\n<li>Third Place: Code for a Cause, Strawbridge Elementary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Middle School Cyber Innovation Awards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Place: Cyber Nuggets, Princess Anne Middle<\/li>\n<li>Second Place: Team 1, Old Donation School<\/li>\n<li>Third Place: Acolympians, Old Donation School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>High School Cyber Security Awards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Place: Cyber Dolphins, Ocean Lakes High<\/li>\n<li>First Place: Netstorm, Advanced Technology Center<\/li>\n<li>Second Place: A Team, Landstown High<\/li>\n<li>Third Place: Tallsomke, Advanced Technology Center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the Maker Challenge, student entrepreneurs had to create a 3D printed product that uses adaptive technology to solve a problem faced by students in their schools. Elementary, middle and high school teams controlled student-designed robots capable of striking, kicking and grasping a soccer ball using code students programmed.
