{"id":6570,"date":"2017-04-30T18:00:58","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T22:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=6570"},"modified":"2017-05-02T16:46:05","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T20:46:05","slug":"vb-school-practical-nursing-celebrates-class-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/vb-school-practical-nursing-celebrates-class-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"VB School of Practical Nursing celebrates its Class of 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cExcited, relieved and proud.\u201d That\u2019s how Aminah Spain described feeling about her graduation from the Virginia Beach School of Practical Nursing (VBSPN).<\/p>\n<p>Spain was one of 15 students celebrated by family, friends and staff at the VBSPN 53<sup>rd<\/sup> Commencement April 28.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VBSPN-Class-of-2017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6578\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VBSPN-Class-of-2017.jpg\" alt=\"VBSPN Class of 2017\" width=\"2303\" height=\"1534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VBSPN-Class-of-2017.jpg 2303w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VBSPN-Class-of-2017-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VBSPN-Class-of-2017-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VBSPN-Class-of-2017-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VBSPN-Class-of-2017-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2303px) 100vw, 2303px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world needs you,\u201d Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Superintendent Aaron Spence told the graduates. \u201cWe need healers; we need thinkers and we need role models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world needs to know that young people today are in fact highly-motivated, talented people who have much to give back,\u201d said Spence. \u201cAnd the world needs to see that all of you, whether you came to this as an adult or a student out of our high schools, the world needs to see that you are willing to put in the hard work it takes to be successful. And make no mistake about it, the field that you have chosen will give you every chance to prove that you are willing to do hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the VBSPN 18-month program, the graduates have shown they are not deterred by hard work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to be dedicated. You\u2019ve got to work for it,\u201d said Alexis Bryant, member of the VBSPN Class of 2017. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to spend those sleepless nights and put hard work into it. We had a test every Monday, every single one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bryant is one of the VBSPN graduates who began the program when she was a senior in high school. She\u2019d worked as hair stylist for most of her life but says knew she wanted to be a nurse. She plans to continue her studies to become a registered nurse, as all of her fellow\u00a0graduates have said they aspire to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to do jail work to begin with,\u201d Jethro explained of her future plans. \u201cMy long-term goal, I\u2019m hoping within the next five years, is to work in a clinic in areas that people don\u2019t want to go to. People don\u2019t pick their situations; we\u2019re talking children up to adolescents. I\u2019d like to work with them. I really would. That\u2019s my goal. I don\u2019t like sitting down. I like not knowing. I want something new each day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from the Health Sciences Academy at Bayside High School in 2006, Lindsey earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in biology from Old Dominion University. It\u2019s been a struggle. Not academically, but just life-wise,\u201d added Lindsey. \u201cIt feels really great that I\u2019m actually accomplishing this because I didn\u2019t really think I was going to make it. I mean, I knew I was, but it felt like it was going to be forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like Lindsey, there were times Latoya Smothers-Tolar didn\u2019t know if she would realize her dream to become a registered nurse. While serving in the U.S. Navy, she was stationed in Virginia. She enrolled at Hampton University to study nursing after getting out of the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had financial troubles and my son was diagnosed with autism, so we had to work that out and figure out what we were going to do and plan for him. Then I found this program and I was able to go because it was affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smothers-Tolar\u2019s relatives from Chicago surprised her with a visit for graduation day, making it an especially emotional day for the mother of two.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6582\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6582\" style=\"width: 1366px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Latoya-Smother-Tolar-and-family.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6582\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Latoya-Smother-Tolar-and-family.jpg\" alt=\"Smothers-Tolar and her proud relatives \" width=\"1366\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Latoya-Smother-Tolar-and-family.jpg 1366w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Latoya-Smother-Tolar-and-family-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Latoya-Smother-Tolar-and-family-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Latoya-Smother-Tolar-and-family-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Latoya-Smother-Tolar-and-family-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smothers-Tolar and her proud relatives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She will continue her plans to become a nurse anesthetist in Jacksonville, Florida, where her husband has military orders to move in November. \u201cIt gives me time to focus on my son and my daughter,\u201d she said.\u00a0Her daughter will begin kindergarten in the fall and her son, who was diagnosed with autism when he was 3 years old will be 8 soon. \u201cHe\u2019s awesome. He speaks now. He can hold a conversation with you. He can have eye contact,\u201d said Smothers-Tolar.<\/p>\n<p>Spence acknowledged and applauded the many paths that brought the graduates to the VBSPN and their future careers, noting that he wants all students \u201cto know that there are numerous opportunities before them and many pathways to reach their goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also encouraged the graduates to consider one more career option.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would be remiss as superintendent of this school division, especially as we get ready to celebrate School Nurses Day in May, not to encourage you to at least consider post study and the option of returning to our division and joining the greatest team of school nurses in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of where graduates decide to use their talents and skills, they are sure to inspire others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhichever pathway brought you to this point, you were all called to serve others in this amazing profession and to support their health and well being,\u201d said Spence. \u201cI hope that as role models for others, you will share your stories and your challenges and your triumphs with others so that they may, too, see a bright future for themselves and be inspired and encouraged, quite frankly, as everyone in this room is tonight, by you to pursue their dreams with the same determination that each of you has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1308949009220453.1073742101.299985226783508&amp;type=3\">VBSchools Facebook page<\/a> to view more photos from the VBSPN 53<sup>rd<\/sup> Commencement.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cExcited, relieved and proud.\u201d That\u2019s how Aminah Spain described feeling about her graduation from the Virginia Beach School of Practical Nursing (VBSPN).
